Hope Glimmers

ART INSTALLATION 7 to 28 JUNE

Update: News article- https://www.churchofscotland.org.uk/news-and-events/news/2021/articles/Hope-Glimmers-art-installation-opens-at-Edinburgh-church

We are delighted that the visual artists Peter Gardner and Heidi Gardner, working as Gardner & Gardner, are creating an installation on the West Mayfield side of the Mayfield Salisbury church building, to be in place for three weeks from 7 to 28 June 2021.

The installation is called ‘Hope Glimmers’, and is created with themes in mind of renewal and hope, speaking of the universal experience of emerging from lockdown. ‘Hope Glimmers’ references a sense of everything opening up again. The gradually increased spacing of the canes hints at the experience of moving on from the tight constraints of lockdown towards the wider possibilities of the ‘new normal’. Of course, this still feels far off, like something hoped for but not yet fully known, an enticing glimmer ahead.

In ‘Hope Glimmers’, the inclusion of gold leaf alludes to its use throughout Art History as a symbol of God’s presence and is also intended to catch the light and the eye of viewers walking by. The two bow forms recall the rainbow images that appeared in windows across the country during lockdown and God’s covenant with humanity after the Deluge. One bow is orientated towards the church and the other towards the street, the installation unites us all in glimpses of God’s presence and glimmers of hope.
