Preparatory Silence for Worship
Introit - Oculi omnium
Words: Psalm 144:15
Music: Charles Wood (1866 to 1926)
Oculi omnium in te sperant Domine:
et tu das escam illorum in tempore
opportuno.Gloria tibi Domine. Amen
[The eyes of all wait upon thee,
O Lord; and thou givest them their
meat in due season. Glory be to
thee, O Lord. Amen]
Call to Worship - (from Micah 6:6-8)
Leader: What shall we bring into the presence
of our God, as our worship and praise?
All: Shall we bring him all that we have,
as ‘burnt-offerings’, as a ‘sacrifice’?
Leader: God has told us what is good,
and what he expects of us.
All: To do justice. To love mercy.
To walk humbly with him.
Hymn 482
Come, Let us To the Lord our God
(t. Kilmarnock)
Prayer of Approach & Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come. Thy will be done, on earth as
it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors. And lead
us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory, for ever.
Amen.
Hymn 510
Jesus Calls Us Here to Meet Him
(t. Lewis Folk Melody)
Reading Hosea 6:1 - 6
Read by Jean MacGilchrist
(OT p.853)
A Call to Repentance 6 ‘Come, let
us return to the LORD; for it is he
who has torn, and he will heal us;
he has struck down, and he will
bind us up. 2 After two days he will
revive us; on the third day he will
raise us up, that we may live before
him. 3 Let us know, let us press on
to know the LORD; his appearing is
as sure as the dawn; he will come
to us like the showers, like the
spring rains that water the earth.’
Impenitence of Israel and Judah
4 What shall I do with you, O
Ephraim? What shall I do with you,
O Judah? Your love is like a
morning cloud, like the dew that
goes away early. 5 Therefore I
have hewn them by the prophets,
I have killed them by the words of
my mouth, and my judgement
goes forth as the light. 6 For I
desire steadfast love and not
sacrifice, the knowledge of God
rather than burnt-offerings.
Anthem - Ave verum corpus
Words: attr to Pope Innocent VI (d 1342)
Music: Edward Elgar (1857 to 1934)
Ave, verum corpus natum
Ex Maria Virgine:
Vere passum, immolatum
in cruce pro homine:
Cuius latus perforatum
Vero fluxit sanguine:
Esto nobis praegustatum,
mortis in examine.
O clemens, O pie, O dulcis Jesu,
Fili Mariae.
[Hail the true body, born
of the Virgin Mary:
You who suffered and were sacrificed
on the cross for the sake of man.
From whose pierced flank
flowed water and blood:
Be a foretaste for us
in the trial of death.
O merciful, O Jesus,
Son of Mary.]
Reading Matthew 9: 9 - 13
Read by Jean MacGilchrist
(NT p.8)
The Calling of Matthew 9 As
Jesus was walking along, he
saw a man called Matthew
sitting at the tax booth; and
he said to him, ‘Follow me.’
And he got up and followed
him. 10 And as he sat at dinner
in the house, many tax-
collectors and sinners came
and were sitting with him and
his disciples. 11 When the
Pharisees saw this, they said
to his disciples, ‘Why does
your teacher eat with tax-
collectors and sinners?’ 12 But
when he heard this, he said,
‘Those who are well have no
need of a physician, but those
who are sick. 13 Go and learn
what this means, ‘I desire
mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have
come to call not the righteous
but sinners.’
Reader: For the Word of
God revealed through Scripture.
ALL: Thanks be to God

THIS MORNING’S CHOIR MUSIC
The short introit from the early
twentieth century is in late romantic
style. It shows the typical
craftsmanship of the Irish composer,
Charles Wood. It is a gentle,
contemplative setting, leading to
a burst of sound for the ‘Gloria.’
Elgar’s melodic setting of the
traditional Eucharist hymn, ‘Ave
verum corpus,’ (Opus 2 no1) is an
early work originally for a setting
of ‘Pie Jesu’ but arranged by him
some years later into its present
form. Each verse is sung by a
female solo voice and then repeated
by the chorus and ending with a
brief coda.
