AS A DIVERSE PEOPLE, THE CHURCH GATHERS TO
WORSHIP ALMIGHTY GOD
Call to Worship - Psalm 107: 29 - 31
Leader: They cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
All: And he brought them out of their distress.
Leader: He stilled the storm to a whisper.
All: The waves of the sea were hushed.
Leader: They were glad when it grew calm,
All: And he guided them to a safe harbour.
Leader: Let us give thanks to God for his unfailing love,
All: And his wonderful deeds for all people.
Hymn 189 Be Still, for the presence Sung by Milda Zinkus
Bible Reading Mark 4:35 - 41 (NIV) Read by Gillian Beeston
Jesus Calms the Storm
35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go over to the other side.’ 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’
41 They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!’

Prayer with Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen

WOULD YOU LIKE TO WELCOME STUDENTS NEW TO EDINBURGH? Mayfield Salisbury Church has many links with the University of Edinburgh, and these have been strengthened by the arrival of the Revd Dr Sandy Forsyth as our minister, with his on-going links to the School of Divinity at New College.
Postgraduate Students arriving in Edinburgh to study at the School of Divinity from overseas often have few if any contacts with locals in general and with places of worship specifically. We would like to offer these students (whatever their faith) a warm Scottish welcome, and are well placed to do so both via Sandy himself and also via Emma Wild-Wood, a member of our congregation, who is the director of postgraduate research studies at New College.
Our proposal, with Emma’s support, is that we would initially hold a welcome event at Mayfield Salisbury (which would be ecumenical and multifaith) during Welcome Week (the week beginning 13 September), to which all new postgraduate students at New College would be invited. Thereafter, if any students wished to be connected with ‘welcome hosts’ of individuals or families from the congregation, we would make that happen. The hosting might take the form of inviting them for a meal, showing them the local sights, joining them at church on a Sunday morning etc.
Obviously the Covid pandemic has had a major impact on overseas student numbers, and we do not yet know how many might be involved. It would be helpful to gauge interest and support from members of the congregation who might like to support this initiative. If you would like to (1) be involved in the welcome event and/or (2) potentially become a ‘welcome host’, please contact Alastair MacGilchrist (
PASTORAL CARE Would you now like to be allocated a visitor or someone to phone you regularly? Are you going into hospital or know of someone who is ill? Please contact Sandy on 0131 667 1286.
ANNUAL LEAVE Kay is on holiday from Sunday 20 to Saturday 26 June inclusive.
CHRISTIAN AID: GIVE THANKS FOR YOUR VACCINATION As more of our family, friends, and neighbours receive their COVID vaccinations, we rejoice and are glad that our loved ones are protected. We give thanks for all the NHS staff and key workers who continue to save lives across the UK.
For the poorest and most vulnerable communities across the world, there is little hope of a vaccine rollout. These people already face a lack of water, food, and healthcare.
Some are homeless. Some are living with underlying health issues such as HIV.
Christian Aid is already on the ground, helping keep people safe from coronavirus with practical support – but with your gift of thanks we can do more.
Have you or your loved ones had your vaccine?
Please give thanks with a donation to help protect our global neighbours while the vaccine is out of reach.
The new Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Lord Wallace, is supporting the Give Thanks Appeal: ‘This is an opportunity to give thanks in a very tangible way. In a quest for global justice, here is a practical opportunity to give real expression in 2021 to loving our global neighbours.’
Donations can be made via the Christian Aid website at www.christianaid.org.uk or by telephone on 020 7523 2269.
