3. POPPY APPEAL 2023 -
WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP?
Poppy Scotland is changing
the way it organises the
Remembrance Sunday appeal
this year. Edinburgh has been
divided into areas, of which
Newington is one and is looking
for an appeal 'team' to contact
local businesses and shops,
deliver poppies and tins to them
then collect and bank the
money at the end.
I have volunteered to co-ordinate
the team and it seems like a good
project for our three churches to
work on together. If you would
like to know more or be part of
the team, please drop me an
email:
give me a call 0780 158 1674 or
pop into Art & Craft Collective,
93 Causewayside (any day but Tuesday)
between 12.00 and 5.00pm for a chat.
When we know who is on board,
we can meet with the lovely person
from Poppy Scotland who is organising
the whole thing.
Thank you. Linsay Given Black

Four Nation Challenge –
PEDAL 4 POVERTY
Alastair and Jean
MacGilchrist are getting
back on their bikes to raise
funds to support those living
in extreme poverty in Malawi,
Nepal, India, and Scotland.
They will be taking on the
Mulanje Mission challenge
to cycle 100 miles. The route,
cycled over 2 days on the 18th
and 19th September, combines
the 5 ferries cycle route
(Arran-Kintyre-Cowal-Bute-Ayrshire)
and a circuit of the Isle of Arran.
Funds raised for EMMS (Edinburgh
Medical Missionary Society) will
help create sustainable healthcare
infrastructures for those living in
extreme poverty, give vulnerable
young girls the opportunity for a
career in healthcare, provide
clean running water at rural health
centres, offer palliative care to
those in need, fight the effects
of healthcare emergencies and

8. 'FAITH AND COMMUNITY
RESPONSE TO THE COST OF
LIVING CRISIS' Tackle the
cost of living crisis. Explore
solutions, sign our petition,
and hear from experts.
Together, we can make a
difference. Monday, 21 Aug
2023 17:30 -19:00
at Mayfield Salisbury Parish Church
From the Edinburgh
Interfaith Association:
Join us for an engaging event
as we delve into the urgent
issue of the cost of living crisis
and explore ways to support the
individuals and communities
most affected. As faith
communities, we firmly believe in
the inherent value of every life
and the fundamental rights to
food, clothing, and safe housing.
While faith communities have
been making significant efforts
by providing warm meals, shelter,
and various forms of support, it
has become evident that more
action is needed to address the
challenges faced by people
struggling with skyrocketing
energy and food prices.
At this event, we are honoured
to have esteemed speakers joining
our panel, including Rt Rev Revd
Sally Foster-Fulton, the
Moderator of the General Assembly
of the Church of Scotland. Sally
is taking a year's sabbatical from
her role as head of Christian Aid
in Scotland to serve as the Kirk’s
ambassador at home and abroad
for the next 12 months. In addition
to Sally Foster-Fulton, we are
privileged to have Dr. Nason Maani,
a renowned Lecturer in Inequalities
and Global Health Policy at the
University of Edinburgh. Dr. Maani's
research focuses on understanding
the impact of structural and
commercial factors on health and
their influence on public
understanding and policy-making.
Joining them is Dr. Gwenetta D. Curry,
an accomplished Lecturer of Race,
Ethnicity, and Health in the Usher
Institute at the University of
Edinburgh. Her research interests
encompass Racial and Ethnic
Health Disparities, Critical Race
Theory, and Black Family Studies.
All are very welcome.

11. SHORT FRINGE SHOW ON
THE HEBREW BIBLE. Dr Anja Klein
is Senior Lecturer on the Old
Testament at New College, the
School of Divinity at the University
of Edinburgh. As part of the
‘Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas’ at the
Festival Fringe, she is performing
a one-woman daytime show called
“Against the Odds” on
18th August. Anja writes:
‘Ever wonder why the scriptures
of Ancient Israel came down to
the present, when other nations
and their religion passed into
oblivion? Ever wonder why people
still worship a God, whose origins
go back thousands of years? The
key to this success story is what
scholars call cultural resilience.
Dr Anja Klein explores what it
means to be resilient, and how
this works for a religious
community. She takes the
audience into the fascinating
world of the Hebrew Bible. What
emerges is a resilient God and
his people, who adapt to crisis
and survive against the odds.’
