Prayer of Approach
& Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name. Thy
kingdom come. Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give
us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our debts, as we
forgive our debtors. And lead
us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine

NEWS AND INTIMATIONS
1. A PILGRIMAGE TO IONA ABBEY
Today, we will continue on a
pilgrimage to the island of Iona
and around the Abbey. Using as
the backdrop the life of St
Columba, and of the Benedictine
community on Iona in the Middle
Ages, we will explore the meaning
of the monastic tradition for our
personal faith and church life in the
21st Century. Our principal guide
over the next few weeks will be the
book by George Lings, Seven
Sacred Spaces: Portals to Deeper
Community Life in Christ (2020).
2. OPEN TO ALL Coffee and tea
will be served in the Bill McDonald
Hall at the close of the Sunday
services. Everyone is very welcome.
3. PASTORAL CARE Welcome to
our new Pastoral Assistant, Pauline
Robertson DCS, who is now the

4. EDINBURGH SACRED ARTS IN
THE FESTIVAL FRINGE 2023 (13TH -
19TH AUGUST) The Sacred Arts
Festival is an exploration of the profound
resonance between faith and the creative
arts. It includes 3 exhibitions, 7 musical
events, drama, poetry and film, as well
as special services. It takes place in a
range of church venues, from the
intimacy of St Vincent’s Chapel at
Stockbridge to St Mary’s Episcopal
Cathedral in Palmerston Place.
Our member, Christine De Luca, will
be leading a poetry and music event,
on Friday 18th August, 2.30 – 3.30 p.m.
in St Mary’s Cathedral, Palmerston Place.
Strafed by Splendour: Under Paolozzi’s
Window will be a celebration of one of
Eduardo Paolozzi’s great artistic
achievements, the Ascension window.

5. SHORT FRINGE SHOW ON THE
HEBREW BIBLE. Dr Anja Klein is Senior
Lecturer on the Old Testament at New
College, the School of Divinity at the
University of Edinburgh. As part of the
‘Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas’ at the
Festival Fringe, she is performing a
one-woman daytime show called
“Against the Odds” on 6th, 10th and
18th August. Anja writes:
‘Ever wonder why the scriptures of
Ancient Israel came down to the present,
when other nations and their religion
passed into oblivion? Ever wonder why
people still worship a God, whose
origins go back thousands of years?
The key to this success story is what
scholars call cultural resilience. Dr Anja
Klein explores what it means to be
resilient, and how this works for a religious
community. She takes the audience into
the fascinating world of the Hebrew Bible.
What emerges is a resilient God and
his people, who adapt to crisis and
survive against the odds.’
Anja provides more info in a video at:
