Music: John Goss (1800 to 1880)
These are they which follow the Lamb
whithersoever He goeth. These were
redeemed from among men, being the
first-fruits unto God and to the Lamb.
And in their mouth was found no guile,
for they are without fault before the

Call to Worship
From Psalm 23
One: Come, lie down in green pastures.
All: We trust the Shepherd.
One: Come, walk beside the still waters
All: We follow the Shepherd.
One: Come, do not fear even the darkness.
All: We are protected by the Shepherd.
One: Come, let goodness and mercy be with you.
All: We live in the Shepherd’s care.
Hymn 59
Oh, Come, and Let Us to the Lord
(t. Irish)
Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come. Thy will be done, on earth as
it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our
debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine
is the kingdom, the power, and the
glory, for ever. Amen.
Hymn
The Lord’s My Shepherd, I’ll Not Want
(t. Townend)
Reading Psalm 23
Read by Joyce Jackson
(OT p.512)
The Divine Shepherd. A Psalm of David
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
3 he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil; for you are with me;
your rod and your staff - they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.
Anthem: The Lord is my shepherd
Words: from Psalm 23
Music: Howard Goodall (b. 1958)
The Lord is my Shepherd, I'll not want;
He maketh me down to lie in green
pastures He leadeth me besides the
still waters. Yea though I walk through
the valley in the shadow of death I will
fear no evil. You are with me you will
comfort me. Surely goodness and
mercy shall follow me all the days of
my life and I will dwell in the house of
thy Lord forever
Reading John 10:1 - 10
Read by Joyce Jackson (NT p.100)
Jesus the Good Shepherd 10 ‘Very truly,
I tell you, anyone who does not enter the
sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by
another way is a thief and a bandit. 2 The
one who enters by the gate is the shepherd
of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the
gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice.
He calls his own sheep by name and leads
them out. 4 When he has brought out all
his own, he goes ahead of them, and the
sheep follow him because they know his
voice. 5 They will not follow a stranger,
but they will run from him because they
do not know the voice of strangers.’ 6
Jesus used this figure of speech with them,
but they did not understand what he was
saying to them.
7 So again Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I
tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All
who came before me are thieves and bandits;
but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am
the gate. Whoever enters by me will be
saved, and will come in and go out and
find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal
and kill and destroy. I came that they may
have life, and have it abundantly.
Reader: For the Word of God
revealed through Scripture.
ALL: Thanks be to God

THIS MORNING’S CHOIR MUSIC
John Goss, one of a number of
distinguished nineteenth century
organist/composers in the Anglican
tradition is now best known as the
composer of the hymn tune for
“Praise my soul the King of Heaven.”
He was organist at St Paul’s Cathedral
and also Professor of Harmony at the
Royal College of Music. The anthem
shows great craftsmanship in setting
the text and in shaping the musical
phrasing. The anthem, a setting of
verses from the 23rd Psalm, is by the
highly talented and popular composer,
arranger and presenter Howard Goodall.
It is best known as the theme tune to
“the Vicar of Dibley” The lilting melody
opening with the sopranos is repeated
in harmony. A more troubled middle
section intervenes before reverting
to the main melody to close.
NEWS AND INTIMATIONS
Forthcoming Deadlines
Order of service for next week: Thursday at 6.00pm
CHANGE! - Next parish magazine Grapevine: Friday 5 May at 6.00pm
1. OPEN GARDEN DAY: DATE FOR THE DIARY
Those of you who visited Alison Glen’s garden
last year will have another opportunity to visit
to see how it has flourished on Sunday 7 May
from 10am-5pm. We can’t promise the sunshine
as last year but the warmth of welcome will be
the same. Alison’s garden is “Greentree” in
Church Hill (EH10 4DW) and any donations or
plant purchase will go in aid of Alzheimer
Scotland. A warm welcome extended.
2. KWAI RIVER HANDICRAFTS Many will
remember Jane and Mike Fucella when they
were partnered with us during their time
working in Sangklaburi, Thailand. The Kwai
River Handicrafts which we supported by
purchasing their beautiful cross stitch card
has now ended. However Jane still has a vast
quantity of these cards which she wants to
sell with all proceeds going to support the
HIV/AIDS project in Sangklaburi. Some of
these cards will be available to purchase after
both services this today. Alternatively a
selection can be seen and purchased on the Etsy
link: www.etsy.com/shop/kwairiverhandicrafts/
3. Help For Kherson Coffee Morning
Saturday 13 May -
10.00am to 12.00pm
at Priestfield Church, Dalkeith Road.
Kherson Help is focussed on helping
the most vulnerable people in
Kherson and the surrounding area.
Family orphanages, families with small
kids, invalids, pensioners, displaced
people and other vulnerable individuals
are not able to feed themselves. Little
aid reached the city in the past 9
months as it was between the frontline
of fighting in southern Ukraine and the
Dnieper. Now Kherson is liberated,
the humanitarian conditions left behind
by the occupation are awful, so we
are continuing to support the people
who have been receiving our help until
the situation is improved enough that
they no longer need us.
More information: www.khersonhelp.org

13. COFFEE AND BLETHERS
RESTARTS Coffee and Blethers was a
new venture started a few years ago to
cover the summer period when the
Thursday Club is on holiday. It is a
friendship group open to the whole
community, especially those who
might feel lonely or isolated and in
need of companionship. We meet in the
Bill McDonald Hall on the 2nd and 4th
Thursdays during the months of June,
July and August from 2.00pm to 3.30pm
starting on 8 June. You don’t have to
stay all the time, just pop in when you
feel like it, stay as long as you wish and
enjoy tea or juice and of course a blether.
We do hope to see you there. If you
would like more details please contact
Christina Somerville, Deirdre Eustace or
the church office (0131 667 1522).
14. VOLUNTEERS - COFFEE AND
BLETHERS We are looking for volunteers
to help run the Coffee and Blethers
group over the 2nd and 4th Thursdays
in the month from 2.00pm to 3.30pm
(June, July and August.) We will make
up a rota so that support is available
for welcome etc. Please contact Christina
Somerville, Deirdre Eustace or the church
office (0131 667 1522) if you are able to help.
15. CROSSREACH PERINATAL SERVICES
Thank you to all those who supported
CrossReach perinatal services at last
Sunday’s services. If anyone has a gift
aid envelope that they would still like
to hand over, please could you put
it in the collection plate at the main
entrance to the church this Sunday.
Giving online is possible by visiting the
crossreach.org.uk page and clicking the
purple “Donate” button at the top right
of the page. This takes you to a Just
Giving page which is for general CrossReach
donations but there is a box in which
you can “Add a message of support”
and please would you type in there that
the donation is for Perinatal Services
(or PNS) which will ensure funds are
routed to PNS. There is also the
opportunity to gift aid your donation.
Many thanks: Ailsa Garland, CrossReach
