Preparatory Silence for Worship
Introit - O Lord, give thy Holy Spirit
Words: Lidley’s Prayer (1566)
Music: Thomas Tallis (1505 – 1585)
O Lord, give thy Holy Spirit into our hearts,
and lighten our understanding,
that we may dwell in the fear of thy Name,
all the days of our life,
that we may know thee, the only true God,
and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.
Call to Worship
One: May the love of the Maker fill our hearts;
All: The flame of the Spirit touch our souls;
One: And the light of Christ fill our minds;
All: As we worship together this day.
Hymn 594 Come, Holy Spirit, Come!
Prayer of Approach, Praise, Confession and The Lord’s Prayer
During which we sing, when prompted and in two sections,
Hymns 619 & 620 Spirit of the Living God
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Spirit of the living God
fall afresh on me;
Spirit of the living God,
fall afresh on me:
break me, melt me,
mould me, fill me.
Spirit of the living God,
fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God,
move among us all;
make us one in heart and mind,
makes us one in love,
Spirit of the living God,
fill our lives with love

Anthem - Come down, O Love divine
Words: Bianco da Sienna (d 1434)
Translated by R F Littlesdale
Music’ William Harris (1883 to 1973)
Come down, O love divine,
seek thou this soul of mine,
and visit it with thine own ardour glowing;
O Comforter, draw near,
within my heart appear,
and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.
O let it freely burn,
till earthly passions turn
to dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
and let thy glorious light
shine ever on my sight,
and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.
Let holy charity
mine outward vesture be,
and lowliness become mine inner clothing;
true lowliness of heart,
which takes the humbler part,
and o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.
And so the yearning strong,
with which the soul will long,
shall far outpass the power of human telling;
for none can guess its grace,
till Love create a place
wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwellin

One: May the words of the Spirit fill our mouths for witness
All: May the fruits of the Spirit guide our path ahead.
THIS MORNING’S CHOIR MUSIC The introit was written in the reign of
Elizabeth 1. The simple syllabic hymn like setting of text which was
favoured under her predecessor Edward, had been relaxed to allow a
mixture of the simple style with a degree of interweaving and imitation of
which this is a supreme example. The last section is repeated for emphasis.
William Harris was from 1933 organist at the Chapel Royal, Windsor, and
was the piano teacher to Queen Elizabeth II. He is renowned as a
composer of Anglican Church music. He arranged his own hymn tune
‘North Pemberton’ into an anthem. The first and third verses are in
unison, for women’s and men’s voices respectively. The second and
fourth are in four parts, the last having a soprano descant.
